There are two contrasting types of islands in the Cape Verde's; the most recognized group is predominantly mountainous. The islands of Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Santa Luzia, Sau Nicolau, Sal and Boavista boast stunning rocky landscapes and breathtaking scenery. Santiago

Santiago is the largest island in the Cape Verdian archipelago with a surface area of 991km2. The volcanic origin of the island is clearly visible in the landscape and mountain peaks; the highest point in Santiago is the Pico d'Antonia, which reaches 1392 meters above sea level.

Fogo

Fogo (fire) was originally called Sao Filipe, upon it's discovery in 1460. The island is circular and is shaped like a volcano; infact the volcano on the island of Fogo is still active! The last eruption was in 1995. Fogo is perhaps best known for its contribution to Cape Verde's agricultural and fishing industry, much of their produce is exported to the other islands.

Brava

The island of Brava is the smallest in the entire cape Verdian archipelago, with a surface area of only 64km2. It is an island of sharp contrast; there are deep valleys and high peaks. The coastline is very shear and rocky with many scenic bays. The island is well known for its humidity, vegetation and many varieties of flowers, which is why the island is often referred to as the "Island of flowers".

San Antao

The surface area of the island of san Antao ids 779m2, which makes San Antao the second largest island in the Cape Verdian archipelago. San Antao was discovered by the Portuguese in 1462, but was not inhabited until 1548. The impressive mountains and cliffs make San Antao a heaven for exploration and trekking enthusiasts.

Sao Vicente

The island of Sao Vicente is often referred to as the Porto Grande Island. Sao Vicente has a surface area of 227km2 and houses the second largest amount of inhabitants in the cape Verdian archipelago. Despite the islands volcanic origin, the island is actually very flat; the highest peak is only 774metres.

Sau Nicolau

Located in the north of the cape Verdian archipelago, the island of Sau Nicolau has a surface area of 343m2. The volcanic past of the island is very evident in every area of the islands landscape. Monte Gordo is the highest point on the island at 1304metreas above sea level. The island has been inhabited since the 17th century.

Boa Vista

The island of boa vista has a surface area of 620 km2 and is the third largest island in the cape Verdian archipelago. Maio

Maio was discovered in 1460, the island was used for cattle breeding. The island began to become inhabited in the 16th century; the main export for Maio was salt.
