Espargos owes its name to the plateau on which it sits, where in times past when it rained with more regularity, small thickets of wild asparagus grew. Today, Espargos constitutes the largest population on Sal, with 12,919 residents it occupies a central position today as it is both the administrative and commercial centre of the island and will become a city in the near future.
