Sal Pedra de Lume Property Guide
Pedra de Lume is the oldest populated location on Sal. Founded in 1804 by Manuel Martins, today it has only 296 inhabitants. Formed by the families of fonner- saline workers, who lived in the lines of houses built at the tine of salt trade, the site has remained practically the same, over the past half century. With the sensation of being stopped in time, Pedra delumeis flail of old buildings including a 19th century chapel, old warehouses, transport mechanisms using iron cables, a milling and sacking system of salt. While many are starting to decay they still stand for the appreciation of tourists.
The Saline constitutes the main tourist attraction of the area. Located in the crater of an old volcano, it is accessible through an artificial tunnel that seems to separate two different worlds, a spectacular example of industrial archaeology, and the saline constitutes one of the few wetlands of the archipelago and the best place on the island fort lie observation of sea birds. Recently named a protected landscape, it is an alluring spot with salt covered soil varying in color from turquoise blue to rosy white.
