1640, the name was later changed upon the astonishing discovery the volcano (now extinct) emitted salt each time it rained. People were so
mystified by what they saw that they renamed the islands SAL, meaning salt.
Sal is a relatively small island with only two main residential areas, the islands capital Esparagos and the popular tourist resort of Santa Maria. With two international airports on the island of Sal it has become the portal to the Cape Verde islands and is perhaps the most popular tourist resort. The islands are situated on the same longitude and latitude as Barbados thus allowing and endless summer with an average of 10-12 hours of glorious sunshine every day.
Sal offers crystal clear waters stunning long white sandy beaches and a stunning tropical landscape. The water sport facilities are world famous with countless tropical reefs where you can swim with dolphins, sea turtles and countless other colorful tropical fish. But, perhaps it is inland where you will find all the action there are great restaurants, bars, nightclubs and the traditional Cape Verde carnivals.

Santa Maria Guide
Santa Maria is the main tourist resort on the Cape Verde island of Sal. Santa Maria has been growing rapidly in the past 20 years and as interest from tourists has grown development on luxury housing projects has begun. If perhaps you are stuck for something to in the Cape Verde islands why not take a trip to the Famous salt Pitts that are located approximately 1km from the town of Santa Maria.
Pedra Do Lume Guide
The volcanic crater, But don’t worry the volcano has been extinct for some time. The crater is just above sea level, a must for any tourists visiting the area. You can walk inside the volcano via a series of artificial tunnels.

Serra Negra
Serra Negra is one of the mountain peaks on Sal island. The mountain is approxaimately 92 meters above sea level and gives excellent views of sal and the surrounding Cape Verde Islands.
Fiura
Fiura is on the northern tip of Sal. It is an open and unsheltered part of the island that is even too treturous for windsurfing. It is however a very good spot for big game fishing, it is quite comon to see the locals with baracuda and marlin.
