Sal History
Sal Island may have been discovered in 1460 by Portuguese explorers though there is no exact date known. The island's first inhabitants were originally from the islands of Boa Vista and Sao Nicola and were devoted fishing and the cattle breeding. The effective settlement of the island was promoted at the end of the 18th century by the administrator Manuel Antonio Martins who was in charge of the exploration and exportation of salt.
